How Brazil crashed and burned. Losing 3-0 to their arch-rivals is unacceptable for any hardcore Brazilian fans. Where was Ronaldinho? As the captain and playmaker of the Brazilian U23 team, he was suppose to lead the way, show fighting spirit, show hunger, ensure discipline and dictate play. However, he was the direct opposite of everything he should be. He was invisible throughout the game with the exception of a freekick which struck the post. He did not display any fighting spirit that will spur the team on and two of his teammates were shown the red card when frustration got the better of them. Where was the discipline? The defeat inflicted by arch-rivals Argentina was total. Defeated 3-0 in the semi-finals, losing their cool resulting in 2 red cards and finally, failing to deliver yet again the only Gold medal they do not have - Olympic Gold.
However, the positives to this particular match is that it announced the arrival of young striker, Sergio Aguero on the international stage. The star of the Argentina team was supposed to be Lionel Messi and the focus was all on stopping him on the pitch. A grave mistake as Argentina is a team good in every department. In a game where Lionel Messi is tamed, when more than 2 brazilian players tackle him whenever he touches the ball, Sergio Aguero took up the mantle to score and score he did to carry Argentina into the finals. He scored not only 1, but 2 goals and won a penalty to put the result beyond doubt.
All hail the arrival of Sergio Aguero!
